Mount Everest Base Camp Overland Tour in Tibet is a breathtaking journey along the untamed landscapes of Nepal and Tibet. This picturesque tour connects Kathmandu to Lhasa, taking you across ancient villages, mountain passes, and sacred monasteries.

With Himalayan vistas, including a visit to Everest Base Camp, this tour promises an experience that will last a lifetime. Each day brings a new facet of cultural and natural beauty to the world's highest plateau during the Mount Everest Overland Tour.

Begin the journey to Mount Everest in Tibet with an adventurous drive through beautiful scenery from Kathmandu to the Kerung border. See rolling hills, rural villages, and Himalayan foothills during this 8-9-hour drive from Kathmandu. Get across the Nepal-Tibet Friendship Bridge and complete the immigration procedures before you head for Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side.

The drive continues in a barren landscape to Kerung town, where the first night on Tibetan soil is spent resting and acclimatizing before ascending to higher elevations in the awe-inspiring Tibetan plateaus.

As you enter Tibet, you will drive from Kerung to Tingri or Lhatse, ascending to Tibet’s high plateau. Witness the dramatic transformation in scenery as alpine meadows give way to windswept plains.

On a clear day, marvel at the panoramic views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Cho Oyu and Mt. Xishapangma. During your Mount Everest Overland Tour, you’ll also pass by the serene Pikucho Lake, a hidden gem amid rugged terrain in Tibet.

The main highlight of the Mount Everest Overland Tour is the visit to Everest Base Camp. Begin early with a drive across high mountain passes, such as Gyatso La and Tsola. The dry but scenic landscapes give way to views of Everest as you reach Rongbuk Monastery.

A short hike takes you to Everest Base Camp, where you stand at the base of the world's highest peak. Later, you will head to Shigatse to have local cuisine and spend a relaxed evening after the grandest hike to Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side.

During your Mount Everest Overland Tour, you will explore Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city and the home of Tashilhunpo Monastery. This religious center is the residence of the Panchen Lama and one of Tibet's most important spiritual sites. Stroll through its prayer halls and be awed by the giant statues and murals. After sightseeing, drive over the Yamdrok-Tso Lake, one of Tibet's holiest and most stunning lakes.

Also, the Mount Everest Overland Tour will let you unwind in a peaceful panorama of blue waters against the white snow-capped mountains. Cross the Brahmaputra River, Tibet's lifeline, before reaching Lhasa. This city offers a profound spiritual experience, with its blend of ancient temples and bustling markets. Spend two full days in Lhasa to uncover cultural treasures like the Jokhang Temple and the Potala Palace.

Walk the Barkhor Bazaar, where pilgrims and locals spin prayer wheels and trade handicrafts. Visit the Drepung and Sera Monasteries, where monks engage in centuries-old traditions of debate and chanting. These outings offer a glimpse into Tibetan Buddhism and its enduring relevance. The striking architecture and powerful spiritual energy leave Lhasa forever etched.

The trek back from the Mount Everest Overland tour follows the route of the Himalayas in reverse, heading towards Shegar. From there, head to the Kerung border and re-enter Nepal. The final stretch loops back to Kathmandu, bringing the journey full circle. Each section of the road has something uplifting to reveal—incredible vistas, inner religiosity, and cultural diversity.

Trip PlanExpand all

Your adventure launches early from Kathmandu, setting off for the Nepal-Tibet border at Rasuwagadhi (Kerung Border). The route carves through picturesque valleys and terraced hills, stretching about 145 km before reaching the border. After attending to immigration and customs on both sides, you’ll enter Tibetan territory and continue onward—around a 25 km drive—to Kerung Town at 2,900 meters. The mountain gorge you traverse gives you a striking first taste of Tibetan landscapes. Once checked in at your local guesthouse, the afternoon is free for rest and essential acclimatization. An evening stroll introduces you to the local shops and culture, helping your body adjust to the altitude. Overnight in Kerung.

Meals: Breakfast

Journey onward across expansive plateaus and winding mountain roads toward Tingri or Lhatse. As elevation rises, the landscape grows more dramatic and remote. You will cross Lalung La Pass (5,050m), a noted high-altitude vantage point with sweeping views of Mt. Shishapangma (8,027m)—the only 8,000-meter peak solely in Tibet. The day’s route reveals nomadic encampments, panoramic Himalayan vistas, and herds of yak. Where you overnight depends on road and lodge availability: Tingri is closer to Everest Base Camp, while Lhatse offers slightly better facilities. Both serve as important acclimatization stops. Overnight at a local guesthouse.

Meals: Breakfast

This is a highlight day, taking you to the famed northern base of Mount Everest. After breakfast, travel toward Rongbuk Monastery (4,980m), then on to Everest Base Camp at 5,200 meters. The landscape is raw and remote, with sweeping Himalayan views all around. From Rongbuk, you can either hike or take an eco-shuttle to the base camp viewpoint for breathtaking sights of Everest’s imposing north face. After some time at base camp, continue to Shigatse—the second-largest city in Tibet. Overnight accommodation is provided in Shigatse.

Meals: Breakfast

Spend the morning discovering Tashilhunpo Monastery, a significant Tibetan Buddhist site dating to the 15th century and seat of the Panchen Lama. The monastery boasts grand golden stupas, intricate prayer halls, and a vast statue of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. Experience the pilgrimage circuit, turn the prayer wheels, and observe daily monastic life. The adjacent old town features vibrant street markets, traditional homes, and lively thoroughfares adorned with prayer flags and yaks. The afternoon can be devoted to exploring Shigatse Dzong or simply unwinding at your hotel for further acclimatization. Overnight in Shigatse.

Meals: Breakfast

Proceed along the picturesque Friendship Highway toward Lhasa. The road traces the Yarlung Tsangpo River, revealing stunning farmland, snowy peaks, and authentic Tibetan villages. Pass through Gyantse—home to the remarkable Kumbum Stupa and Pelkor Chöde Monastery (optional stop based on time). As you approach Lhasa, the landscape transitions into greener, more populated valleys. On arrival, check in to your hotel near Barkhor Street or the iconic Potala Palace. The rest of the day is free for gentle exploration and rest. Overnight in Lhasa.

Meals: Breakfast

Dedicate the day to Lhasa’s spiritual and cultural icons. Start with a guided exploration of the Potala Palace (3,700m), the former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, featuring historic chapels, relics, and panoramic city views from its upper levels. Later, visit Jokhang Temple—the spiritual heart of Tibet—where you can observe pilgrims and explore sacred treasures. The adjacent Barkhor Bazaar is perfect for browsing local handicrafts, incense, and traditional yak wool goods. Experience genuine Tibetan cuisine at a neighborhood teahouse. Overnight in Lhasa.

Meals: Breakfast

Leave Lhasa and embark on a return journey westward, largely retracing your route through the Tibetan plateau. The road covers about 655 km, traversing Shigatse and Tingri, with another opportunity to take in the region’s dramatic mountains, turquoise rivers, and expansive grasslands. Rest stops can be made as needed. On arrival in Shegar, settle in at a local guesthouse for a basic but comfortable overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast

Set off early from Shegar for the long drive back to the Tibet-Nepal border at Kerung. The scenic return journey traces your previous route, providing a final look at the vast highlands and mountain vistas. After clearing border formalities, continue to Kathmandu, where the journey concludes.
