Chandragiri hiking is a popular outdoor day activity in the southwest of Kathmandu valley. The hike offers stunning views of the Himalayan mountain range, including Mount Everest (8,849 m), Gaurishankar (7,134 m), Dorje Lhakpa (6,966 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), and many others. This hike is suitable for people of all ages with or without any high-altitude experience. 

The Chandragiri hike begins in the town of Thankot, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Kathmandu. From here, trekkers will follow a well-marked trail that winds its way up Chandragiri hill through subtropical forests. The trail is relatively easy, with only a few steep sections, and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

As trekkers make their way up the trail, they will pass through forests of oak and rhododendron, and have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife such as mongoose, monkeys, etc. And birds like Red-vented Bulbul, Indian Pond Heron, Spotted Dove, Great Egret, etc are seen along the way. You also have the option to use a cable car ride that leads up to the top of the hill if you wish to escape the walking part. 

At the top of Chandragiri hill, trekkers will reach an altitude of 2,551 meters (8,373 feet) and will be rewarded with stunning views of the Himalayan mountain range. There is a temple at the top as well known as Chandragiri temple. From the surrounding of the temple, you can see the peaks of Annapurna (8,091 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), etc. The scenery is especially stunning at sunrise and sunset time.

After taking in the views, trekkers can either continue on the trail to other destinations, such as Nagarkot or Shivapuri National Park, or they can return to Kathmandu. The total length of the Chandragiri Hiking trail is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) and can be completed in a half day.
