Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek is a moderate seven-day trek that is likely to appeal to people who prefer a more intimate time away from the crowds. It is a little secret: on a trail, you can experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. We trek through terraced green farmland and thick forests, with the superb peaks of the Langtang Himalayas to keep you company on the way. We go deeper into an intensely rich Buddhist culture, where ancient monasteries, prayer walls, and chortens dictate the pace of life. Stay in the traditional villages of the Tamang people, one of the few authentic hill tribes left in Nepal. Experience local homes (converted to provide a degree of comfort for tourists) and lodges where all accommodation, lodging, and food are provided on a rotational basis. This way, the whole community benefits, rather than just a few. The trekking experience here is very different from the Everest Region and the Annapurna Region.

Tamang People:

The Tamang people were originally horse traders who migrated from Tibet many centuries ago. They have retained their own unique identity with their strong Tibetan roots as well as their language. Historically, they have always been one of the most marginalized ethnic groups in Nepal. They suffered badly during the 2015 earthquake, as their homes tended to be in vulnerable areas that were cut off from help. By choosing the Tamang Heritage Trail trek, you are not only going to have a more remote and unique experience but also help bring a vital source of income to the Tamang people.

Before the Trek:

Most of the Nepal Gateway Trekking itineraries include two nights in Kathmandu. These days are used to sort out permits, etc. You will also be introduced to your guide, who will go over the tour in more detail with you. It also gives our guests time to adjust to Nepal. There is time to visit Nepal’s bazaars and vibrant markets, and it is also time for you to purchase any items you may need for the trek to come. There is a huge array of shops selling trekking gear from brands such as North Face and Mountain Hardware, among others. There are also many other shops selling trekking gear, with many of these offering very acceptable quality at much lower prices.

On the trail:

We leave Kathmandu early for the eight-hour drive to the entrance of the Langtang Valley. It is a very scenic journey, winding through hills and eventually climbing high up to Dunche with superb panoramic views of the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and the peaks of the Langtang region to savour on the way. The road then winds down to Saybru Besi, our trek start point. The following days are delightful, on a trail that offers many viewpoints of the superb mountain scenery. The trail leads us into deep forests and hidden valleys in a region known for its biodiversity. Nights are also quite special, as we get time to sing and dance with local communities who are always willing to teach their culture and way of life to anyone interested.

What you experience in Langtang Tamang Heritage Trek:

  • Visit Nepal’s Tibetan-influenced hill tribes and directly contribute to their rural economy.
  • Fabulous views of the Himalayas
  • Bathe in the hot spring waters at Tatopani.
  • Stay in a local homestay to learn more about the Tamang people and their way of life.
