Pokhara to Kathmandu Travel After the Accident: Bus or Flight for Trekkers?

It’s deeply sad that a bus crash happened recently on the road from Pokhara to Kathmandu, causing loss of lives and injuries. Our thoughts are with the families affected. Travelling on Nepal’s mountain highways can sometimes be challenging because of narrow curves, steep hills, and long driving hours. The accident on February 23, 2026, near Dhading, shook both locals and travellers. Some tourists were among the victims, which made the news even more painful for the trekking community.

It is completely natural to feel nervous after hearing such news. When something tragic happens, it makes us pause and question our own plans.

But it is also important to look at the full picture.

Trekking in Nepal is still safe. Thousands of travellers move between Kathmandu and Pokhara every week without any issues. But smart planning makes all the difference.

Let’s walk through your options calmly so you can choose what feels right for you.

Option 1: Taking the Tourist Bus (Safe & Common Choice)

First, let’s be clear: buses between Pokhara and Kathmandu operate every single day. Thousands of locals and tourists use them safely each week.

The key is choosing the right type of bus.

We Recommend: Tourist or Deluxe Tourist Buses

These are very different from local public buses.

Tourist buses usually offer:

  • Reserved seating (no overcrowding)
  • Morning departures (around 7:00 AM)
  • No night driving
  • Experienced highway drivers
  • Regular rest and meal stops
  • Cleaner and more comfortable interiors
  • Seat belts in many modern vehicles

These buses are designed mainly for travellers and trekkers.

Best Bus Types to Book

  1. Deluxe Tourist Bus:  Comfortable, affordable, and widely used by trekkers.
  2. VIP / Sofa Tourist Bus:  Wider reclining seats, fewer passengers, smoother ride.
  3. Tourist Hiace Van:  Good for small groups, slightly faster than large buses.

What to Avoid?

  • Local public buses
  • Very cheap roadside ticket sellers
  • Night buses
  • Overcrowded vehicles

Sometimes saving a few dollars is not worth the stress. As the saying goes, cheap can become expensive.

A Personal Note from Nepal Gateway Trekking

We truly understand how recent news can create fear. If you are feeling unsure, that feeling is valid.

At Nepal Gateway Trekking, we treat every traveller like family. We carefully select trusted transport partners and experienced drivers. We do not book night buses. We avoid operators that do not meet proper safety standards.

If a vehicle does not feel right, we simply do not use it.

Your peace of mind matters just as much as your trekking experience.

Option 2: Taking a Flight (Fastest & Most Comfortable)

If you prefer to avoid the highway altogether, flying is a very good option.

Flight Details

  • Flight time: 25–30 minutes
  • Beautiful mountain views (weather permitting)
  • Minimal travel fatigue
  • Several flights daily during trekking season

Flights operate between Pokhara International Airport and Tribhuvan International Airport

Reliable Airlines

  • Buddha Air
  • Yeti Airlines
  • Shree Airlines

Flights cost more than buses, but they save time and reduce road exposure. After a long trek, many travellers appreciate the comfort.

If you feel anxious about road travel, choosing a flight is completely understandable. Safety and comfort should never feel like luxuries.

So… Should You Change Your Plans?

Here is our honest advice:

  • If you are comfortable with mountain roads → Book a Deluxe Tourist Bus
  • If you want maximum comfort and less travel time → Choose a Flight
  • If you feel nervous after the recent accident → Take the Flight for peace of mind

There is no wrong choice. The best choice is the one that helps you relax.

Are Treks from Pokhara Still Safe?

Yes.

The trekking routes themselves, whether in the Annapurna region, Mardi Himal, Ghorepani, or other areas, are not affected by highway incidents. Once you are on the trail, you are walking through peaceful villages, forests, and mountain landscapes far from traffic.

Tea houses are open. Trails are active. Guides and porters are working normally.

Nepal remains one of the world’s most loved trekking destinations for a reason.
